Fuck yeah! Tuesday 13th of october, 8 o'clock PM. I saw Megadeth and Slayer play live! They were fucking SWEET! Megadeth owned the stage first up. No intro or fancy effects besides strobe lights and an epic, face-melting guitar solo. Dave Mustaine is a musical GOD! It was absolutely unbe-fucking-lievable. They played 502, Skin o' My Teeth (which I did not expect. Pleasantly surprised), Peace Sells, Set the World Afire, and a fuckload of songs from their new album, Endgame. Probably the best concert I've been to since Opeth came through. The strobes fucked with my camera a bit. I got some video footage but it's grainy and though the mic perfomed admirably, it still couldn't take the sheer volume.
I got stuck in the seated section because the mosh pit tickets sold out, but that was fine. I got an awesome view of the show.
After Megadeth stepped down (throwing their wristbands, picks and other items into the crowd) and a 20 min intermission Slayer stepped up to the plate.
Now imagine this. The house lights black out. The crowd roars. A white sheet covers the stage, but it's black from the darkness. Then it turns red. Red with bloodstained lights. A tuned down guitar intones an intro, sounding as if doom marched toward you with an iron hammer. The stains turn into blood red crosses. Fog rolls from behind the curtain. Then as the guitar reaches a crescendo, the curtains illuminate, drop, and BAM! Screaming death metal! Slayer plays World Painted Blood (their cover song for their new album, World Painted Blood, which releases in november)
They did a lot of their best stuff too. Skin, Angel of Death, War Ensemble, South of Heaven, Reigning Blood and Ghosts of War. And they played a lot of songs I didn't know from World Painted Blood (such an awesome title)
They were almost as good as Megadeth. Almost. Very close call. It came down the Tom Araya fucking up his lyrics in Ghosts of War which swung my preference. That and after I got home from Perth I just HAD to learn a Megadeth song.
I got shirts too! The new album shirts from both bands! I've been wearing them all week!
Before the Concert I had a real treat. I was staying at my old music teacher's place for the gig. He was going too and I needed a couch to sleep on so it made sense. He said "Hey Kyle, wanna play on my ghost?" Curious I asked what he meant. He smiled and showed me to the music shed, and inside, staring me in the face, was a Platinum Edition BC Rich WARLOCK! The SAME MODEL KERRY KING of SLAYER PLAYS! He let me play that thing on an 800 watt Vox stack with distortion, relay and overdrive pedals. The most metal setup I've ever played on. I've gotta say, The Warlock is the most awesome, the most metal sounding guitar. Even me, a total noob on guitar made it sound awesome. Playing Die by the Sword on a warlock... Wow..
Oh yeah. And some dick threw a shoe at Tom Araya during South of Heaven. The crowd decended on him like vengeful zealots. The moron's probably in hospital now. Lesson is: do not anger a crowd of deros and bogans when in the middle of them by throwing shoes at singer/bassists. Blunt, but I believe this lesson can be applied anywhere.
